The glorious sunflower. This queen of the season blooms from July to October. Certainly no wallflower, this large, sunny stem makes for a people-pleasing floral gift and features in many of our most popular seasonal bouquets.
Our sunflowers arrive in bud. We choose to send them out at a specific point in their early maturity so that you get to see as much as possible of their vase life, from bud to full bloom.
To help get the most out of your sunflower bouquet, trim the stems on arrival at a 45 degree angle - this allows for maximum stem hydration. Then place in a clean vase filled with fresh, lukewarm water with their Waitrose Florist flower food added. If possible, change this water daily. Sunflowers are a thirsty bunch!
To support British growers, we use homegrown sunflowers in our bouquets while they are in season. Recognisable by their large coffee-coloured flower heads crowned with double layers of bright yellow petals, our British-grown blooms are harvested for Waitrose Florist by a father and son team in the scenic Lincolnshire Fens.
When the last of our British-grown sunflowers have bloomed, we turn to our Kenyan growers at the Waitrose & Partners Foundation to supply flowers that look good and do good. The Waitrose & Partners Foundation funds projects to improve the lives of the Kenyan community who grow, pick and pack our sunflowers. So when you buy these blooms, you are actively helping the people who grow them.
No surprise to learn that this ray of sunshine symbolises happiness and positivity. It's also a symbol for friendship and the perfect flower to send to your favourite person to show them just how much they mean to you.
Did you know, this heliotropic bloom follows the sun throughout the day so it doesn’t miss a single ray.
