Caring for peonies

Make the most of these seasonal British flowers by following our easy care tips to keep your peonies in bloom

How to care for your peonies

Our peonies are delivered in bud so that you can enjoy them for as long as possible but there are some simple tips you can follow to make your bouquet last even longer. Our peony care guide is full of easy care advice to keep your peonies looking lovely for days.

Preparing your peonies

Cut about half an inch off the stems of your peonies on a diagonal and remove any leaves from the stem that will be below the water level of your vase. When trimming the stems be careful not to squash the area you are cutting as this can reduce water intake and shorten the life of your peonies. Place your flowers in a clean vase filled with enough room temperature water that it covers three-quarters of the stem.

Where to display your peonies

Place your peonies in a cool area of your home that is free from direct sunlight and drafts. This will keep your flowers in bloom for longer as warmer temperatures will make your peonies wilt faster.

Keeping your peonies hydrated

Keep an eye on the water levels in your vase and clean and refill it at least every 2-3 days. For maximum water absorption, cut your peony stems at an angle each time you change the water. If any discoloration starts to show at the bottom of the stem, be sure to cut off past that point. Don't use warm water when refilling the vase as this opens up the blooms quicker, shortening their lifespan.
